How to use the banner maker

      1. Choose a base color. This is the color of the banner you start with in the loom.
      2. Pick a pattern color, then click a pattern. Each click adds a new layer on top. Change a layer's color or order in the list at any time.
      3. Follow the loom steps in survival, or copy the /give command in creative or on a server where you have operator rights.

      How banners work in Minecraft

A banner starts as a single color, crafted from six wool of the same color and a stick. In a loom you add patterns one at a time, each with its own dye. Later layers are drawn on top of earlier ones, so the order of layers matters as much as the patterns themselves.

Banners can be placed on walls or the ground, put on shields, and turned into map markers in Java Edition by using a map on a placed banner. A patterned banner can be washed in a water cauldron to remove the last pattern you added.

      Design tips

      • Plan for 6 layers. Survival looms stop at 6 patterns, so build the main shape with as few layers as possible.
      • Use the base as a layer. Choosing the right base color often saves a whole pattern.
      • Cover to cut shapes. To make a shape the loom does not have, add a large pattern, then cover part of it with the base color.
      • Gradients add depth. A Gradient or Base Gradient in black on top of bright colors makes a design look shaded.

This maker includes the geometric patterns. Patterns that need special items with pictures, such as Creeper, Skull, Flower or Globe, are not drawn here.

      Frequently asked questions

How many patterns can a banner have?

In survival, a loom can add up to 6 patterns on top of the base color. Banners given with commands can hold more layers, which is why this maker lets you go beyond 6 for /give.

How do I make a banner in a loom?

Place the banner in the left slot, a dye in the middle slot, then choose a pattern from the list. Take the result and repeat for each layer. The loom does not use up the banner pattern items, only the dye.

Which patterns need a banner pattern item?

Most patterns only need dye. Special ones need a banner pattern item in the loom, including Bordure Indented and Field Masoned (crafted from Paper plus Vines or Bricks), and decorative designs such as Flower, Creeper, Skull, Globe, Snout, Flow and Guster.

Which version is the /give command for?

The command uses the item component format introduced in Java Edition 1.20.5 and used in 1.21. It will not work in older versions or in Bedrock Edition.

Can I put a banner on a shield?

Yes. In Java Edition, combine a shield and a banner in a crafting grid to copy the banner's design onto the shield.
