How to build a sphere layer by layer

  1. Choose the size. Enter the diameter in blocks. A sphere is as tall as it is wide, so a 21-block sphere is 21 layers high.
  2. Mark the center column. Place a pillar where the middle of the sphere should be. Every layer is centered on it, shown by the yellow lines.
  3. Build from the bottom. Start at layer 1, build it, go up one block and press ▶ for the next layer.
  4. Use the faded outline. It shows the layer you just built, so you can see whether the next ring steps outward or inward.

Domes for roofs and biodomes

A dome is the top half of a sphere. Set the shape to Dome and the chart starts at the widest layer. To put a dome on a round tower, build the walls with the circle generator using the same diameter, then add the dome layers on top. Glass domes work well for greenhouses and underwater bases.

Tips for big spheres

  • The block count assumes a hollow shell one block thick. Turn on Solid to see how many blocks a filled sphere needs; it is usually many times more.
  • Odd diameters have a single center block on each layer, which keeps everything symmetric.
  • For very large builds, place the outline of each layer in a temporary block first and check it from above before using expensive materials.

Frequently asked questions

How do I build a sphere in Minecraft?

Pick a diameter, then build from the bottom layer up. Each layer of a sphere is a circle of a different size. Use the layer slider here to see the exact blocks for each level, build that layer, go up one block and move to the next layer.

How do I make a dome?

Switch the shape to Dome. The generator shows only the top half of the sphere, starting from its widest layer, so you can place it on top of walls of the same diameter.

Should I use a hollow or solid sphere?

Hollow is almost always what you want for buildings, biodomes and planets: it shows only the shell, so you need far fewer blocks. Solid is useful for terrain, giant boulders and decorations you never go inside.

What does the faded outline mean?

With 'Show layer below' turned on, the faded blocks show the previous layer. This makes it easy to see where the new layer steps in or out compared with the one you just built.

What is the biggest sphere I can build?

This generator goes up to 128 blocks wide. Java Edition worlds currently allow 384 blocks of build height, from Y -64 up to Y 319, so even large spheres fit if you start low enough.
