Potion modifiers

IngredientWhat it does
Redstone DustExtends the duration
Glowstone DustRaises the effect to level II (shorter duration)
Fermented Spider EyeCorrupts a potion into its opposite: Swiftness/Leaping → Slowness, Healing/Poison → Harming, Night Vision → Invisibility
GunpowderTurns any potion into a Splash Potion you can throw
Dragon's BreathTurns a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion that leaves an effect cloud

Splash, lingering and tipped arrows

In Java Edition a Splash Potion keeps the full duration for anyone hit directly. A Lingering Potion's cloud gives one quarter of the normal duration, and Tipped Arrows, crafted from eight arrows around one Lingering Potion, give one eighth.

Most useful potions

  • Fire Resistance (8:00) for exploring the Nether and fighting near lava.
  • Swiftness II and Strength II for boss fights and PvP.
  • Slow Falling for the End islands, Elytra practice and building high up.
  • Water Breathing and Night Vision for ocean monuments and underwater builds.
  • Weakness plus a Golden Apple to cure a zombie villager and get discounted trades.

Frequently asked questions

What is the base for most potions?

Almost every potion starts as an Awkward Potion, made by adding Nether Wart to a Water Bottle. The main exception is the Potion of Weakness, which is brewed by adding a Fermented Spider Eye directly to a Water Bottle.

What do Redstone and Glowstone do?

Redstone Dust extends a potion's duration (for example 3:00 becomes 8:00). Glowstone Dust raises the effect to level II but shortens the duration. A potion can have one or the other, not both, and not every potion can be upgraded.

How do I make a splash or lingering potion?

Add Gunpowder to any potion to make a throwable Splash Potion. Add Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion to make a Lingering Potion, which leaves a cloud on the ground. In Java Edition lingering effects last a quarter of the normal duration.

Which potions were added in 1.21?

The Tricky Trials update added four potions: Wind Charging (Breeze Rod), Weaving (Cobweb), Oozing (Slime Block) and Infestation (Stone). Each lasts 3:00 and cannot be extended or upgraded.

Can you brew a Potion of Luck?

No. The Potion of Luck exists in Java Edition but cannot be brewed in survival. It is only available in Creative mode or with commands.

Are durations the same in Bedrock Edition?

Most are the same, but a few Bedrock values differ slightly, and Bedrock also has a Potion of Decay that Java does not. This chart follows Java Edition 1.21.
