Minecraft Brewing Chart

How brewing works, from a plain Water Bottle to Splash and Lingering potions. For every recipe in one table, use the potion chart.

The brewing flow

STEP 1Water BottleFill a Glass Bottle at any water source. Place up to 3 in the stand.
STEP 2Awkward Potion+ Nether Wart The base for almost every potion.
STEP 3Effect potion+ effect ingredient e.g. Sugar → Swiftness, Magma Cream → Fire Resistance.
STEP 4Upgrade (optional)+ Redstone longer, or + Glowstone level II.
STEP 5Corrupt (optional)+ Fermented Spider Eye flips the effect, e.g. Swiftness → Slowness.
STEP 6Splash / Lingering+ Gunpowder throwable, then + Dragon's Breath lingering cloud.

Setting up a brewing stand

  1. Craft the stand: 1 Blaze Rod in the middle of the top row and 3 Cobblestone (or Blackstone or Cobbled Deepslate) in the row below.
  2. Add fuel: put Blaze Powder in the far-left slot. One Blaze Powder lasts for 20 brews.
  3. Add bottles: up to three Water Bottles or potions go in the three bottom slots.
  4. Add the ingredient: place it in the top slot. Brewing takes 20 seconds and uses one ingredient for all three bottles.

Brewing tips

  • Always brew three at once. The ingredient is used once no matter how many bottles are in the stand.
  • Brew Awkward Potions in bulk. Keep a chest of them so each new potion is one step away.
  • Automate it. Hoppers can feed ingredients from the top and fuel from the side, and pull finished potions out from below.
  • Corrupt last. Upgrade with Redstone or Glowstone before adding a Fermented Spider Eye where possible, so the corrupted potion keeps a useful duration or level.

Frequently asked questions

How do you start brewing in Minecraft?

Craft a Brewing Stand from one Blaze Rod and three Cobblestone (or Blackstone or Cobbled Deepslate). Fill glass bottles with water, place up to three in the bottom slots, add Blaze Powder as fuel, then put Nether Wart in the top slot to make Awkward Potions.

How long does one brew take?

Each brewing step takes 20 seconds, and it processes all three bottles at once.

How much fuel does Blaze Powder give?

One Blaze Powder fuels 20 brewing operations. Each operation can process up to three bottles, so one Blaze Powder can make up to 60 potions over time.

Where do I get Nether Wart?

Nether Wart grows in Nether Fortresses, usually next to staircases, and in Bastion Remnants. Plant it on Soul Sand in any dimension to farm it.

Why is my brewing stand not working?

Check that the stand has fuel (the Blaze Powder slot on the left), that the ingredient is valid for the potions in the bottom slots, and that the bottles contain water or a potion rather than empty glass.
